Protected content

Why is content protected?

Protected content includes content encrypted with digital copyright protection tools. Data encryption prevents the illegal copying and distribution of information.

Before you start viewing protected content, you receive encryption keys via a private protocol. This happens with the help of the following systems:

Encryption system

Supported browsers and platforms

Widevine

Yandex Browser, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Android

FairPlay

Safari, iOS

PlayReady

Microsoft Edge, Windows, Xbox, Playstation, Smart TV

For you to view protected content on your device, two conditions must be met:

  • Your device must support one of the encryption systems.
  • You must have the rights to view the protected content (for example, you bought a movie or paid for a Kinopoisk subscription).

Playback of protected content on Linux

Video playback in Linux on Debian distributions (Ubuntu and its derivatives, Mint, and Debian) is only possible in Yandex Browser, Google Chrome, Chromium, and Firefox. Playback in other browsers isn't guaranteed.

If the DRM video doesn't play in these browsers:

Check the browser version

Find out the browser version, update the browser to the current version if necessary, and restart the computer.

If you have the latest version of the browser installed, run the command in the console:

sudo /path to the browser folder/browser-beta/update-ffmpeg

By default, Yandex Browser is installed in opt/yandex/browser-beta.

Clear the cache

Open the browser, turn on Incognito mode, and try playing the video.

If playback is successful, clear the browser cache.

Update the operating system

To find out your Linux version, run the following command in the terminal:

cat /proc/version

Update the operating system if necessary. To do this, enter the following in the terminal:

sudo apt-get update`

Confirm the action with the root password and run:

sudo apt-get upgrade

Press Y and Enter.

Wait for the installation to finish and restart the computer.

Update the codecs

Run the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install libavcodec-extra && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras && sudo apt-get install chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

Restart your computer.

Protected content doesn't play

Update your browser

An outdated browser version may not support the technologies that are used to download videos quickly and conveniently. Install the latest browser version.

Restart the browser

At the first browser launch, not all plugins that are necessary for the correct operation of the content encryption system may be enabled. To fix this error, restart the browser, and the plugins will be enabled automatically.

Exit Incognito mode

In Incognito mode, the playback of protected content often doesn't work. To watch a protected video, exit Incognito mode and open the video link in a new browser window.

Allow the playback of protected content

If you're using the latest browser version and receive a message that the content can't be played, protected content playback is most likely prohibited in the browser.

Follow these steps in your browser:

  1. Click  → Settings.

  2. In the left part of the page, click the Websites tab.

  3. At the bottom of the Sites section, click Advanced site settings.

  4. In the Protected content section, enable the Allow protected content to play and Allow sites to use identifiers to play protected content options.

    Note

The Allow sites to use identifiers to play protected content option isn't available in the browser in Linux and macOS.

  5. Restart the browser for the changes to take effect.

  1. Click Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the page, click Advanced.
  3. In the Privacy and security section, click Site settingsAdditional content settings.
  4. Enable the Sites can play protected content and Sites can use identifiers to play protected content options.
  5. Restart the browser for the changes to take effect.
  1. Click Settings and go to the General tab.

  2. In the Digital Rights Management (DRM) Content section, enable the Play DRM-controlled content option.

If the video doesn't play when the option is enabled, try using another browser, such as Yandex Browser.

  1. Click SettingsAdvanced and go to the Privacy & security tab.
  2. In the Privacy & security section, click Content settingsProtected content.
